May offers us a powerful moment of reflection and action. As we honor Mental Health Awareness Month and Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, we are reminded that healing, identity, and community are deeply interconnected. Mental health awareness is not passive  it urges us to confront the systemic inequities that shape who receives care, whose suffering is recognized, and whose healing is supported. For many communities, including AANHPI populations, mental health is too often stigmatized, misunderstood, or inaccessible due to cultural barriers, language gaps, and historical exclusion from mainstream systems of care. This month reminds us that wellbeing is inseparable from equity, and that promoting mental health requires culturally responsive approaches rooted in trust, community wisdom, and lived experience. By centering community-driven solutions and investing in collective healing, we affirm that mental health is not a luxury  it is a fundamental right that must be protected and advanced for all.

A styled pull quote graphic with a light blue rounded rectangle background and teal quotation marks framing the text. The italic teal text reads: "Mental health is not a luxury - it is a fundamental right that must be protected and advanced for all." The design uses opening quotation marks in the upper left and closing quotation marks in the lower right, emphasizing the statement as a notable quote about mental health equity and access.

This year carries added meaning as we celebrate the launch of the Collective for Health Equity (CHE), formerly the National Network to Eliminate Disparities in Behavioral Health (NNED). The name may have changed, but the mission remains rooted in the same unwavering commitment: advancing community-based organizations toward inclusive, responsive, and community-led health equity. CHE focuses on equity in action, culturally grounded practice, connection and collaboration, learning and growing, and being bold in the work that’s done.

The launch of CHE signals a renewed commitment to collaboration because equity cannot be achieved in isolation; progress happens when organizations, advocates, and community leaders come together with intention, humility, and shared purpose. There is power in numbers, and when communities unite across cultures and geographies, they create a force capable of reshaping systems and expanding access to care. This is also one of the strengths that has always defined AANHPI communities, and it is the strength that will continue to drive the movement for mental health equity forward.

Across many communities, including AANHPI, stories of migration, resistance, cultural pride, and intergenerational strength remind us that wellness is not an individual pursuit but a collective one. Mental health is shaped by the environments we build, the histories we honor, and the voices we choose to amplify. When we acknowledge the power in community, we recognize that healing grows stronger when shared. When we uplift a collective voice, we challenge systems that have long overlooked culturally grounded approaches to care. These truths guide the work of the Collective for Health Equity as it continues to champion communitydriven leadership and culturally responsive mental health strategies.

As we honor this month, we celebrate not only awareness but action. We celebrate the cultural traditions that sustain us, the resilience that carries us, and the partnerships that make lasting change possible. The Collective for Health Equity stands as a reminder that when communities lead, systems transform, and when we honor the fullness of our histories and identities, we create space for every person to thrive.
