Lakiya was raised in the urban section of Boston, MA, called Dorchester, MA, or “The Dot,” as the locals call it. She attended middle and high school in Wellesley, MA, as part of the METCO program.  The Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO) is a voluntary, state-funded program in Massachusetts that aims to increase diversity and educational opportunities and reduce racial isolation in schools. Lakiya quickly learned how to adapt to a culturally rich neighborhood and a predominantly Caucasian school system very quickly, referring to herself as a “chameleon.” After graduating high school, Lakiya enrolled in the Year Up program to gain professional and technical skills. Year Up is a national program that offers tuition-free job training to young adults to help them reach their potential through careers and higher education. The program aims to close the opportunity divide by ensuring equitable access to economic opportunity, education, and justice for all young adults. She learned invaluable skills and interned as a technology consultant at the Massachusetts government website Mass.gov. Completion of this program jump started Lakiya’s professional and collegiate career. As a young mother, Lakiya learned how to balance her responsibilities. She continued her relationship with Year Up by volunteering on the Alumni Event Planning Committee and eventually began employment as an Executive Assistant. Lakiya has worked in healthcare, biotechnology, and non-profit organizations. She is drawn to companies that are community-based and mission-driven, which led her to Change Matrix.

Why did you choose equity work?

I have been interested in equity work since a young age, the discussions behind the scenes, the work that goes into equity, and the changes made. Change Matrix allows me to continue the work I am passionate about and interested in. I chose equity work because equity is needed, and I would like to contribute as much as possible.
