Juneteenth, also called Emancipation Day and Jubilee Day, is always a time to celebrate. This annual holiday marks the day that slaves were finally freed from Galveston, Texas, despite the fact that the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln two years earlier.

Although Juneteenth has been celebrated every year since, it took 156 years for the day to be recognized as a federal holiday in June 2021 when President Joe Biden signed it into law. In honor of this historic holiday, here are five ways you can celebrate:

1. Attend an Event

Celebrating Juneteenth with parties, festivals, and family gatherings is what makes the day special, and there are thousands of Juneteenth celebrations going on across the United States today. Take a moment today to see which public events are local to you and stop by or check out ones accessible virtually like The Juneteenth Foundation’s multi-day celebration.

2. Learn the History

Aside from being a day to celebrate, Juneteenth is the perfect time to educate oneself about Black culture and history. While there are many exhibits and educational resources to find both in-person and online, check out The Historical Legacy of Juneteenth virtual history offered by the National Museum of African American History & Culture. There, you’ll also find reading lists and resources for children and youth to get involved, too.

3. Support Black-Owned Businesses

Many businesses are still reeling from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, so it’s more important than ever to be mindful about providing community support. A great way to support the Black community on Juneteenth is to buy from Black-owned businesses either in-person, or via online directories like The Nile List and Bold Xchange.

4. Donate and Volunteer

Take a moment today to donate some funds to a charity — here’s a list of 17 to get you started — or make time to volunteer at a local organization that celebrates and supports the Black community.

5. Make a Recipe

Recipes are vital during a Juneteenth celebration, and there are hundreds to try! Visit this list of 48 to start your planning.
