Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual tradition that lasts from September 15 through October 15. The National Archives says it celebrates the “achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success.”

“The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua,” says the Month’s official site. “In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.”

Begun in 1968, the observance was initially a week under President Lyndon Johnson and was later expanded to be a month long, from September 15 through October 15, under President Ronald Reagan in 1988. In 2022, the theme is Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.

In honor of the theme, the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers (NCHEPM) has compiled a list of Hispanic-serving institutions, graphics to share on social media, and more.

“The theme encourages us to ensure that all voices are represented and welcomed to help build stronger communities and a stronger nation. The announcement was made during the Council’s March meeting. NCHEPM members, associates, and partners from various federal agencies and affinity groups, including the general public, selected the theme through a voting process, which started in February 2022 with 15 theme submissions.”
