Change Matrix (CM) is pleased to partner in a learning network called CONNECTED, led by the National Council for Behavioral Health. Five pilot sites from Anchorage AK, Whatcom County, WA, Washburn County, WI, New Orleans, LA and Eagle Pass, TX were chosen in an application process to implement an innovative approach of their choosing to decrease suicide, anxiety and depression among adolescents and increase their access to care. The constant innovative aspect of this initiative across all of the sites, was authentic engagement and partnership with young influencers in all elements of the innovation.
National Council, Change Matrix, Youth MOVE National and Watauga Consulting collectively wrapped support and opportunities to learn around the pilots individually and collectively. We worked hard to create an environment that valued exploration, vulnerability and learning. The CM role, specifically, was to provide coaching and consultation to all pilot teams.
As we have watched pilots work with youth to implement universal screening for 9th graders, institute peer support among the immigrant population, develop and refine youth led suicide prevention in schools, integrate vocational needs, clinical mental health needs and basic need such as food and shelter in one program and distribute information about mental health in a mobile van, we have learned three important things:
1) The success of youth and adults to work together is based upon the relationships that they create and intentionally maintain. It takes time, support and the approach must be tailored to the community and the individuals;
2) There must be a balance between youth and adult voice in innovation. Both are important; and
3) when confronted by a pandemic, innovation in teaming and partnerships as well as services and programming can pivot. And there is learning in the pivot process.
The foundation under this very special project is that we are all CONNECTED.
