Having worked with Change Matrix (CM) since 2014, Change Consultant Alice Choi is no stranger to the change process and the adaptability needed to shine in a virtual environment whose project landscape is constantly shifting. The CM team caught up with Alice to have her fill us in on why she joined CM, what drew her to a career in public health, and which projects have been her favorites over the years.
For Alice, her relationship began with CM as a student contractor.
“I was in a health equity firm and I was excited when they said they had an ad open,” she said. “I applied and I got it. The role was health equity-based and that was one of my majors in my undergrad.”
But beyond having the qualifications on paper, Alice was drawn to the role because it gave her an opportunity to develop her lifelong interest in equity work.
“Being a minority and a first-generation born immigrant, health equity work is just something that I want to do,” she said. “There are so many people who don’t have these opportunities, everyone isn’t equal, and I wanted my work to focus on that.”
Alice quickly settled into the flow at CM, and began taking on work across a variety of projects within the company. A self-described “jack-of-all-trades,” Alice has experience working with “a little bit of everything.”
“I do a lot of resource curating and I do a lot of content managing on National Network to Eliminate Disparities in Behavioral Health (NNED) and I’m currently tech support for webinars for the National Training & Technical Assistance Center (NTTAC),” Alice said, adding that she also has a role on the Colorado Equity Compass (CEC). “And right now, I’m managing a program for Mental Health Technology Transfer Center Network (MHTTC).”
Because of the shifting nature of Alice’s project work, she says that adaptability is a skill she’s cultivated over the years and sets her apart from others.
“Because I have so many different roles, you have to adapt to their varying needs, and that’s one of the biggest skills that I and everyone has to have in CM,” she said. “You have to learn to adapt to your situation and work on whatever is needed to be done for various projects.”
She went on to describe some of her favorite project work.
“I definitely really enjoyed working on a project I had a long time ago called Behavioral Health Interpreter Training, and I got to do evaluation work for that. We don’t have that project anymore because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but in my current role with CM Co-Founder Suganya Sockalingam is the MHTTC leadership training, which is also really, really fun,” she said. “I really love working with different people and sharing my skills.”
