As we go through our busy and sometimes hectic lives, it can be easy to forget about the importance of nature and the environment. At Change Matrix (CM), which is a fully virtual company, this can be especially difficult, as our work requires that we spend most of our days working via computer screens. However, today is Earth Day and CM is taking note!
Begun in 1970, this annual event encourages us to take a moment and appreciate the beauty and wonder of our planet. It also reminds us that there are steps we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint and curb pollution. Here are a few ways that CM staff members are doing their part to take care of the Earth not only today but in the future.
Nancy Vang: I compost all of my organics at my local neighborhood composting site and aim to always carry a collapsable reusable bag with me for my groceries and errands.
London Losey: I use reusable water bottles and grocery bags almost exclusively. I don’t use straws, and use our regular ceramic dishes rather than paper plates or plastic wear when hosting guests or parties. I try to walk everywhere I can rather than drive. I shop local a lot. I’ve also given TerraPass carbon offset e-cards as gifts.
Rachele Espiritu: I am an avid composter — to the point where I will go through our trash to fish out things that my family “forgets” are compostable. Even though we don’t have as much trash because we recycle and compost, we use compostable trash bags. Denver finally passed a 10-cent charge for one-use plastic bags, and I always have a reusable bag in my purse.
Elizabeth Waetzig: I am so excited to be composting throughout the year so that I can add it to my garden and grow delicious food in an organic way. On this earth day, I am making sure that my soil is ready and planning my garden. I tend to over-plant. Every year, I learn something new about gardening. It gives me peace and I feel good that I am doing something good for the earth and our bodies.
Eve Kucharski: I’m pledging to keep using my reusable water bottle and I am avoiding plastic water bottles if at all possible. I’m also going to try and reduce my takeout orders to prevent the waste of so many single-use plastic containers.
Alina Taniuchi: Earth Day is probably my favorite “holiday” — I’ve been a tree hugger since I was old enough to know what that was. Throughout the year, I almost exclusively walk or bike when I’m traveling in the city; try to buy food from local sources to supplement the food I grow myself; and try to give new life to old items. If I am buying new (or-new-to-me) items, I’m doing so from B-Certified and 1% for the Planet companies. My little apartment composter is one of my favorite things I’ve ever bought (and my plants love it too)!
